Swimming as Cross-Training, etc
Peri Howlitt some time ago requested I share some info re the Masters Swimming Club with our membership. As Peri wrote:
“Whether you are an accomplished swimmer, or thinking of participating in your first triathlon, recovering the swim stroke of your youth or exercising in a low impact group environment, consider joining your local adult swim club: the 1000 Islands Y Swim Masters. Members must be at least 18 years old and able to swim a minimum of 1 length of the YMCA pool without stopping. The club has a modest yearly membership fee which covers pool rental and coaching. For more information about the 1000 Islands Y Swim Masters, go to http://www.brockvilley.com/aquatics-instructor.htm or http://vimeo.com/25380216 or contact the club registrar at 1000IslandsSwim@cogeco.ca
Interested individuals can arrange with the club registrar to attend a swim practice in order to decide if they would like to join the club.
Please note:
You do NOT have to:
- swim any stroke other than freestyle (front crawl)
- do flip turns
- dive off the starting blocks
- enter any competitions
unless you choose to do so!”
Nick Van Wijk
The club recently lost a true friend and supporter with the passing of Nick Van Wijk. Nick, with his wife Nel, had been a faithful volunteer at our races for many years. Nick was a true gentleman, with a lovely sense of humour. He led a very active and full life up until the end at the age of 91.
Nick had his own special spots to marshall during a race: the path from Parkedale to California Avenue, the entrance to the Brock Trail at John Street and the TIP water station at LaRue Mills Road. New race directors were cautioned not to assign these spots to anyone else, they were Nick's. Nick had earned them and rightfully claimed them as his own!
One of my own abiding memories of Nick is of him standing at his spot, the path from Parkedale to California Ave., smilingly directing us runners in a particularly cold Freeze Your Buns race. Why memorable you ask? Well, Nick had earlier fractured a hip after a spill from his bike - another of his many activities - and there he was on two canes at his post, faithful as ever to the Brockville Road Runners! Nick will definitely be missed. May he rest in peace
Rick Swift and past presidents Rick Oliver and Tony Dunbar, along with other members of the club, attended the funeral home on Saturday last and conveyed our condolences and sympathy to Nel and other members of Nick's family. A donation in the name of the BRRC was made to the Heart and Stroke foundation.
The 34th Annual Frozen Foote 4 Mile (6.4K) Series; Run #1, Sat Dec 10, 10:30am in Canton NY
Our good friend Peter Feickert from Canton has announced the first run in this very popular series will be held Saturday, December 10, 2011 over in Canton. A companion to the Summer Sunset Series and a sure sign Winter has arrived!
As Peter relates it:
The series consists of four, four-mile road races at St. Lawrence University, which are held regardless of weather conditions. All races start at 10:30 a.m. with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the lobby of Appleton Arena, on Miner Street in Canton, NY. Registration fees are $5 for the series or $2 per race.
Frozen Foote long-sleeved T-shirts will be awarded to runners who complete all four races. The four mile out-and-back course starts and finishes in the Appleton Arena parking lot and is run on the rolling hills of Miner Street Road.
The series races are scheduled for Saturday, December 10, 2011; Saturday, January 14, 2012; Saturday, February 11, 2012; and Saturday, March 10, 2012.
Highly recommended and well worth organizing some carpools to attend. For further information check www.northernrunner.org or e-mail pfeickert@verizon.net
Happy Running!
