What a Week!
It has been a hectic, enjoyable, event-filled week for the club.
Sunday:
All started with the Breakfast Run from various points on Highway 29 - that was the original plan; too complicated to explain what actually transpired - and from the Athens Post Office to Christie and Dan Reitsma's beautiful new home on Charleston Lake. The heavy rain failed to dampen our spirits and a delicious breakfast was served up to an appreciative group of road runners. Kudos to Dan and Matt who were very active in the kitchen - Denise was also seen displaying her unique egg-cracking technique! Thanks Christie and Dan for your hospitality.
Monday:
The evening saw another very successful track meet at TISS for Christie's current crew of Fun 2 Runners. This amazing programme run by the indefatigable and dedicated Christie, goes from strength to strength and is now in its 10th year. Track meet director, Anne Hodgson, with the help of an enthusiastic group of volunteers, put together a smooth and polished meet that rivalled any seen at that exalted track venue. Well done Anne!
Randy Givogue has compiled the detailed meet results and they may be accessed by clicking F2R Meet Results Congrats to all the youthful winners and to all who took part.
Tuesday:
Uncle Bob Castle's regular Track Workout (P+Q) took place at TISS attended by experienced and aspiring half and full marathoners alike with a view to TIP and Picton in particular.
Wednesday:
Canada Games Torch Relay from Gananoque to the Athletes Village at St. Lawrence College in Brockville. 19 Hall of Famers and 13 BRRC members carried the Lance Besharah designed replica torch on its 55K journey, including 47K along the TI Parkway. Torch was finally passed to Walter Gretsky who lit the Games Cauldron at the special enclosure in the athletes village. A memorable occasion for all involved.
Included were: Merv Hodgson, Michele Perry, Liam Cullen, Paula Wiltse, Terry Hodge, Zack Boyd, Denise Anthony, Rod Palmer, Randy Frith, Eithne Dunbar, Lynda Cavanagh, Murray Tait and Tina Melbourne. The club was represented in the in-town sections by Muriel Carlyle, Nieves Bonucchi, Corrinne Miller and Doris McEwan. Our drivers were Anne Hodgson, Rick Swift and Sue Frith. We also had great support in keeping us all safe, from St. John Ambulance, the Gananoque City Police, the OPP (Sandra Barr), and Brockville City Police. Thanks to all, runners and drivers alike.
Thursday:
Canada 55+ Games Open 5K/10K was held at 9am on a special course from St. Lawrence Park. Rick Swift worked diligently for weeks to put the whole event - a brand new addition to the Games - together and the run was a tremendous success, garnering well deserved praise from local and visiting runners. The Games Organizing Committee were also most appreciative of the efforts of Rick and his volunteer team and indications are that this Brockville innovation will be adopted at future Canada Games venues. Detailed results of the 5K and 10K may be accessed by clicking Results
Fun 2 Runners and TISS X-C squad joint workout session took place.
On Thursday also a number of local runners ran in the famous Glen Tay Block Race 14.7K in Perth. Some good performances resulted: Pascal Peladeau 60:44; Laurence Jones 67:04; Shelley Steenwyk 67:35; John MacMillan 67:42; Yves Decoste 69:59 and Louise Wood 81:32. Congrats to all!
