Profile of Hugh Wilson

Hugh Wilson 81, from Dorval QC, has been a frequent and popular participant in many of our races over the years. We’re delighted Hugh, a club member, agreed to be profiled on our website.
Hugh’s answers to our questions are short and to the point. These answers however, in a very matter of fact manner, reveal a running life of exceptional achievement.
Hugh has:
- Been running since 1953
- Competed in a one mile race won by Derek Ibbotson, English track star and world record holder of the 1950s
- Run a 2:46:21 Ottawa Marathon in 1980 – his only marathon
- Competed in an astonishing 2450 races and he’s not done yet!

Where are you from originally and what brought you to this area?
From Larne in County Antrim in Northern Ireland.
I came to Saint John, New Brunswick for work and then to Montreal for work
How long have you been running?
Since about 1953.
Do you run for fun or competitively?
For fun and competitively.
Best running achievement?
16/16 in a 1 mile won by Derek Ibbotson way back.
Greatest running disappointment ?
None.
What is your favorite race distance? Why?
None.
A notable race moment or most memorable race?
Finishing the Ottawa Marathon of May 11, 1980 in 2:46:21, my only one.
Why did you join BRRC?
I liked the members.
Ever been injured? How did it happen?
A few times.
What is your favorite race?
No particular one.
What does your daily or weekly workout consist of?
4 mile daily walk at present..

Completed 2450 races to date.
